How to Make Your Chips Ahoy! Mug Cake

Making our mug cake is as simple as it gets. Empty the pouch contents into any microwave-safe mug or bowl that holds at least 12 ounces. Add exactly 2 tablespoons of water (a standard measuring spoon makes this foolproof), then stir until the mix is smooth and no dry pockets remain.

Microwave on high for 100 seconds—that’s it. Your mug cake will rise and set during cooking, creating a warm, gooey center with soft edges. Let it cool for 30 seconds before eating, as the chocolate chips stay very hot. Top with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra-indulgent treat.

Ingredients & Nutritional Information

Each Chips Ahoy! Mug Cake pouch contains enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sugar, chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, dextrose, soy lecithin, natural flavor), dried Chips Ahoy! cookie pieces, cocoa powder, and leavening agents. We use real chocolate chips and cookie pieces—the same iconic taste you know from our original cookies.

One prepared mug cake (made with water only) contains approximately 280 calories, 8g fat, 50g carbohydrates, and 3g protein. Allergen information: contains wheat, soy, and milk ingredients. May contain traces of eggs and tree nuts due to shared manufacturing equipment.

Storage & Shelf Life

Our mug cake pouches are shelf-stable and require no refrigeration before opening. Store them in a cool, dry pantry away from direct sunlight—ideal conditions keep the mix fresh for up to 12 months from the manufacture date printed on each pouch.

The individually sealed pouches make these perfect for stocking your dorm room, office drawer, camping kit, or emergency snack stash. Once you open a pouch, use the entire contents immediately for best results. The mix absorbs moisture quickly, so we don’t recommend resealing opened pouches.

So quick and actually tastes like the cookies
I was skeptical about a microwave mug cake, but this really does taste like Chips Ahoy! cookies. The 100 seconds is accurate—I did 1:40 total and it came out perfect. Great for when I want something sweet but don’t want to bake a whole batch. The cookie pieces mixed in are a nice touch.

Dorm room lifesaver
I keep a box of these in my dorm. No oven needed, just water and a mug. My roommate and I make them during late-night study sessions. They’re actually really good—soft and chocolatey, not dry like some other mug cakes I’ve tried.

Perfect portion control
I love that it’s just one serving. I can have a warm dessert without keeping a whole package of cookies around. The instructions are super easy to follow and it’s ready in less than two minutes. I add a little ice cream on top and it’s restaurant-quality.

Great for office snacking
I keep a few pouches in my desk drawer. When the afternoon slump hits, I make one in the break room microwave. It’s cheaper than running to the bakery and honestly tastes better than most of the stuff they sell there. Just make sure you use a big enough mug because it rises a bit.

Kids love making these themselves
My 10-year-old can make these without any help. It’s simple enough that I feel comfortable letting her use the microwave for it, and she loves having a warm treat after school. We tried adding peanut butter chips once and it was even better.

Travel-friendly dessert
I travel for work constantly and these pouches fit perfectly in my carry-on. Hotel room microwaves make them a breeze, and it beats eating vending machine snacks. The 100-second cook time is accurate across different microwaves I’ve tried. Definitely buying more.

Good to know

Questions About Chips Ahoy! Mug Cake Mix

The total active time is about 100 seconds (1 minute 40 seconds) in the microwave, plus about 30 seconds to mix. From opening the pouch to eating, you’re looking at roughly 3 minutes total. The cook time can vary slightly depending on your microwave’s wattage—higher-wattage microwaves (over 1200W) may finish in 90 seconds, while lower-wattage models might need the full 100 seconds or slightly more.

Let the mug cake cool for 30 seconds after microwaving before eating, as the chocolate chips stay very hot.

No, just water. Each pouch contains all the dry ingredients premeasured, so you only need to add 2 tablespoons of water. No eggs, no oil, no milk required. This makes the mug cake mix incredibly convenient for dorm rooms, offices, or anywhere you have access to water and a microwave.

If you want a richer texture, you can substitute milk for water, but it’s completely optional—the mix is designed to work perfectly with plain water.

Use any microwave-safe mug or bowl that holds at least 12 ounces (about 1.5 cups). The batter rises as it cooks, so you need enough headroom to prevent overflow. Standard coffee mugs work great. Ceramic, glass, and microwave-safe plastic containers all work fine.

Avoid using metal containers or mugs with metallic trim, as these aren’t microwave-safe. We recommend a wider mug rather than a tall, narrow one for more even cooking.

Each pouch makes exactly one serving—a single 2-ounce mug cake. The portion is designed as an individual dessert or snack, roughly equivalent to eating 3-4 regular Chips Ahoy! cookies but in warm cake form.

If you’re serving multiple people or want a larger portion, simply use multiple pouches and prepare them in separate mugs. Each mug cake is 280 calories when prepared with water only.

The mix is specifically formulated for microwave cooking, and we don’t recommend oven baking. The rapid cooking in 100 seconds creates the signature gooey center and soft texture. Oven baking would dry out the small portion before it cooks through properly.

If you absolutely don’t have a microwave, you could try steaming the batter in a covered ramekin over simmering water for 10-12 minutes, but results won’t be the same as the microwave method.

Yes, each pouch contains real chocolate chips and real Chips Ahoy! cookie pieces mixed into the batter. You’ll see chocolate chips throughout the finished mug cake, and they stay melty and gooey after the 100-second cook time.

We use the same quality chocolate and cookie pieces found in our original Chips Ahoy! cookies, so you get that authentic taste in mug cake form.

Store unopened pouches in a cool, dry place like your pantry or kitchen cupboard. No refrigeration needed. The pouches are shelf-stable for up to 12 months from the manufacture date printed on the packaging.

Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The individually sealed pouches are great for stocking up—they take up minimal space and stay fresh until you’re ready to use them.
